This third book in the series about heroes of WWII chronicles the life of Ludviga Pukas (Ukraine): Ludviga was a domestic worker who was hired by a Jewish high school teacher and took care of her three children. When the Germans occupied their town in July 1941, their home was burned to the ground. The family had to apply for new identity documents. Ludviga, knowing that the children would be in danger as Jews, suggested to their mother that they register them as Ludviga’s children. Their mother reluctantly agreed and Ludviga and her new family were given a new apartment, the authorities believing that she was a single mother who had lost her home. Everyone moved in together, the teacher posing as the housekeeper for the family. The children were never discovered and remained safe. A simple but powerful story about the ability of one person to make a massive difference in the lives of some young people.
